Fork- Antietam National Battlefield, MD (3D)

Institution: Virtual Curation Laboratory, Virginia Commonwealth University

State: Maryland

Object: Fork

Era: 19th Century

Archaeologists uncovered this civil war era fork from the Antietam National Battlefield in Maryland, a site famous for preventing Confederate occupation in 1862.

Bone handled forks, such as this one, would be the last of its era. By the mid to late 19th century, consumers preferred cheaper and decorative nickle-plated flatware for their dining tables.
